Nyx launch information
Privacy
This notice explains how Nyx handles personal information when you join the waitlist or use the app. Sleep information can be sensitive, so we have written this in direct language.
Last updated: October 25, 2026
Who is responsible
Nyx operates the Nyx website, waitlist, and app. The Nyx Privacy Team is accountable for our privacy practices. You can contact the team at privacy.support@nyxsleep.app with a privacy question, complaint, or request.
Information we collect
For the waitlist, we collect your email address, your marketing-consent choice and time, the notice version shown to you, unsubscribe status, and email-delivery records.
In the app, only the following leaves your phone: an account identifier; your name and email address if you choose Sign in with Apple (Apple lets you hide your real email); the sleep facts and profile details sent for cloud coaching, described below; an app-integrity token that shows a coaching request comes from a genuine copy of Nyx; app usage events; and crash reports.
Everything else stays on your phone and is never sent to us: your saved sleep history and coaching results, schedules, reminders and alarms, widget and Live Activity information, birthday, gender selection, and profile image. Reminders, alarms, and “summary is ready” alerts are scheduled on your phone. Deleting the app deletes this information.
Why we use it
We use waitlist information to confirm your signup, send the launch-related marketing messages you agreed to receive, honor unsubscribe requests, and keep a consent record.
We use app information to operate Nyx: authenticate your account, generate your morning coaching, secure the service, find and fix crashes, and understand which features help. Nyx is general wellness guidance, not medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment.
Cloud coaching and sleep-data sharing
To generate a coaching response, the app sends a limited set of information to our backend: last night’s planned and actual bedtime and wake time; the same details for up to seven earlier nights; fall-asleep timing; recovery and coaching preferences; your Nyx plan; time-zone offset; and, when you have entered them, your preferred name and your age in years. Your birthday, gender selection, and profile image are never sent.
Our backend uses your plan to choose the coaching format and passes the sleep details, fall-asleep timing, and preferences to OpenAI’s API. It does not currently pass your name or age to OpenAI, and it never sends your account identifier. Before a response is returned, the generated coaching text is checked with OpenAI’s moderation service so unsafe content is not shown.
Each request is sent with your account sign-in token and an app-integrity token so our backend can confirm the request is from you and from a genuine copy of Nyx, and apply a daily request limit per account.
OpenAI processes this information to return the requested coaching response. Nyx does not sell sleep information, use it for targeted advertising, share it with schools or parents, or permit it to be used to train OpenAI models. OpenAI API inputs and outputs are not used to train OpenAI models unless an organization explicitly opts in; Nyx has not opted in.
Apple Health
Apple Health access is optional and off until you turn it on. Nyx can save the nights you log into Apple Health, and can import nights from the last 14 days recorded by an Apple Watch or another app.
Imported nights are stored on your phone like nights you logged yourself, and recent ones are included in the cloud coaching request above. Health information is never used for advertising or sold, and Health sleep data is never sent to analytics or crash reporting. Crash reports only note whether saving to or importing from Health is turned on. You can change Health access at any time in the iOS Settings app.
Usage analytics and crash reports
Nyx uses Google Analytics for Firebase to record a few app events: finishing onboarding (including whether you set a different weekend schedule), starting and logging a night (including that night’s length in minutes), and receiving coaching (including whether recovery was suggested), along with your coaching and recovery preferences. Advertising storage and ad personalization are turned off.
Nyx uses Firebase Crashlytics to receive crash reports and error logs with your device model and iOS version. Reports can also include a few app-state details, such as whether a night is currently being logged, whether Apple Health saving or importing is on, and short notes such as when the app opened or a Shortcut ran.
Neither includes your account identifier, name, email, or sleep times; they use a random app identifier instead. Both are on by default, and you can turn either off at any time in the app under Settings, Privacy. Nyx shows no ads and does not track you across other companies’ apps or websites.
Service providers and locations
We use DigitalOcean to host the Nyx backend and PostgreSQL waitlist database in New York City, United States. We use Firebase, provided by Google, for account authentication, app-integrity checks (Firebase App Check with Apple App Attest), app analytics, and crash reporting. Firebase Authentication processes authentication data in the United States; other Firebase services may process information on Google’s global infrastructure.
We use OpenAI, LLC in the United States to generate requested coaching responses, Resend, Inc. to send waitlist and launch emails, and Apple for Sign in with Apple and Apple Health. These providers process information only to provide services to Nyx under their applicable terms and safeguards. Your information may therefore be processed outside your province or country.
Retention and deletion
We retain waitlist details and consent records until you unsubscribe or, if you do not engage with a launch message, for up to 24 months after launch. We keep enough unsubscribe information to make sure we honor that choice.
Firebase account information is retained until account deletion. Nyx’s backend uses coaching information to generate the requested response and does not keep a sleep-history database. OpenAI’s standard API abuse-monitoring logs may retain API content for up to 30 days. Crash reports are kept for up to 90 days, and usage analytics for up to 14 months. We may keep limited information longer where required by law, to resolve a dispute, or to protect the service.
If you use Nyx as a guest, you can delete your account and all Nyx data on your phone in the app under Settings. This also resets your analytics identifier and discards unsent crash reports. If you signed in with Apple, email privacy.support@nyxsleep.app from the email address associated with your account to request deletion. We will complete verified privacy requests within 30 days, or tell you if more time is legally permitted and needed.
Your access and correction rights
You can ask for access to the personal information Nyx holds about you, how we have used it, and which providers have processed it. You can ask us to correct inaccurate information or delete your account and associated information.
Because your sleep history is stored on your phone, you can export it yourself at any time as a CSV or JSON file in the app under Settings, Your data. Email privacy.support@nyxsleep.app with the subject line “Privacy request.” We may need to verify your identity before acting. You can withdraw marketing consent immediately through the unsubscribe link in any Nyx email.
Security
We use account authentication, app-integrity checks, access controls, encrypted connections, and service providers’ security measures to protect information. No online service can promise absolute security, but we limit access to information to the people and providers who need it for the purposes described here.
Young people
Nyx is designed for teenagers and students. We aim to explain privacy choices clearly and collect only what is needed to provide the service. If a person is unable to provide meaningful consent, a parent or guardian should contact us before that person uses Nyx. We do not knowingly use young people’s personal information for targeted advertising.
Changes and concerns
We may update this notice when Nyx or its data practices change. We will post the current version here and update the date above. Start with the Nyx Privacy Team if you have a concern. You may also have the right to contact the privacy regulator in your province or country, including the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada.
